Ghostkey

Ghostkey is a cloud novel-writing app that pairs a plain manuscript editor with AI for line editing, plot analysis and continuity. The AI reads your manuscript and returns notes, beat maps and character sheets rather than writing the book. It is very new (its blog and tutorials date from August–September 2026), so there's little track record yet.

What You Get#

• Line edits you approve: Flags filter words, POV slips, repetition and typos, each with suggested wording. Nothing changes until you click Apply.
• Self-learning style sheet: Your spellings and house rules, learned from proofreads. Lines starting with * are locked.
• Plotting room: A prose outline or beat cards from templates such as Save the Cat. It can also build a beat map from an existing draft, then propose chapters to accept or skip.
• Manuscript reports: Pacing, theme, genre expectations, reverse outline and continuity checks (the eye colour that changes in chapter nine).
• World bible that updates itself: Characters, places and terms are picked up from the text and filed chapter by chapter. It's shared across books in a series, and your own entries override what the AI finds.
• Chat with the book: An assistant that has read every chapter, with a read-only switch that stops it editing.
• Other inputs: Dictation that knows your invented names, handwriting photo import, and Astrohaus Freewrite drafts via Dropbox.
• Free export: The Terms promise DOCX, EPUB and HTML export on every plan. The export dialog also offers PDF and TXT.

Who It's For#

• Novelists who write their own prose: The line editor and reports give feedback rather than generated chapters.
• Series authors: A shared, self-updating bible catches continuity slips across books.
• Freewrite owners: Drafts synced from Postbox to Dropbox can be dropped straight into the open chapter.

Pricing: Free (no card) includes the editor, writing tracking, moodboards and a small weekly allowance of AI runs. Basic is $9.99/month and adds plotting, character sheets, book reports, thesaurus, rephrasing, unlimited line edits and continuity checks. Standard is $19.99/month for 10× Basic's usage. All paid plans are monthly Stripe subscriptions, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the period. The app's billing data also lists a $49.99/month Pro tier that isn't on the public pricing page.

Strengths#

• Clear data policy: Writing is never used for AI training. Text reaches Anthropic, Google and others only through no-training commercial APIs (ElevenLabs for dictation), and the database is hosted in Frankfurt.
• The author stays in control: Line edits never apply themselves, chat edits can be switched off, and locked style-sheet rules are kept word for word.

Limitations#

• No independent reviews yet: No third-party coverage found; several unrelated "GhostKey" apps share the name.
• Cloud-first: Offline is a safety net only; unopened books won't load and adding chapters needs the server.
• No real-time co-writing, word goals or sprint timers.
• Usage terms conflict: The pricing page says allowances reset weekly, the Terms say monthly, and the vendor doesn't publish exact quotas.
• Some text generation: An AI chapter planner and chat rewrites of passages you agree to exist, even though the privacy policy says AI prose is never inserted.
• Unclear platforms: The site mentions desktop and phone apps (the phone client is Android-first), but no download pages or store listings were found. The marketing pages point phone users to ghost-key.app in the browser.

Alternatives#

Dabble Writer is the AI-free choice with real-time co-authoring. NovelCrafter and Sudowrite have similar story bibles but put far more weight on generating prose. For planning without AI, see Plottr.
