Plottr is dedicated plotting software built for authors who think visually. Unlike general writing tools that bolt on an outline view, Plottr centers the entire workflow on a timeline—storyboards, character arcs, and world-building notes exist in a shared canvas where everything connects. It is made by Fictional Devices and claims 40,000+ writers.

What You Get#

• Visual timeline: Drag-and-drop scene cards across a multi-line canvas showing multiple plot threads, character arcs, and chapter markers simultaneously. Default, Stacked, and Tabbed views; filter by POV, character, place, or tag.
• Structure templates: Pre-built frameworks for Hero's Journey, Save the Cat, Romancing the Beat, Three-Act Structure, Story Genius, Snowflake Method, Lester Dent, and 12-Chapter Mystery, plus scene and character templates. Load one or build your own. Plottr's own pages disagree on the count—the features page says 30+, the homepage says 40+.
• Series bible: Keep characters, locations, world-building rules, and timelines consistent across an unlimited number of books in a series within a single project. A dedicated Series View auto-generates an outline from your timelines.
• Character sheets: Enneagram, Myers-Briggs, Big Five, Goal/Motivation/Conflict, D&D sheets, and custom templates. Family tree visualization for managing complex casts.
• World-building tools: Dedicated sections for magic systems, cultures, locations, and mythology—more structured than a document folder, less complex than a full wiki.
• Idea Board and Idea Threads: An in-app Idea Board (added Oct 2025) collects loose ideas before they land on the timeline. Idea Threads is a separate free iOS/Android app from the same team for capturing text, audio, and photo ideas on the go; with Plottr Pro they sync to the cloud and drop into Characters, Scenes, Notes, and Places.

Who It's For#

• Plotters and outliners: Authors who map their story before writing a single scene get maximum value—Plottr has no prose editor, so pantsers (who write without outlines) will find less use for it, though Plottr argues the series bible earns its keep after a first draft too.
• Series writers: Managing continuity across multiple books in a series is where Plottr's shared character and world-building databases pay off most.
• Visual thinkers: Writers who build mental models as timelines and corkboards find Plottr's interface more intuitive than folder-based outliners.

Pricing: Three tiers, every one of them with unlimited household device licenses. Plottr (desktop only) is annual or lifetime with no monthly option: $60/year or $150 lifetime. Plottr Pro adds the browser app, cloud sync, cloud backups, and real-time collaboration at $9.99/month, $99/year, or $599 lifetime. Plottr Pro + Community layers on a private author community and the Education Vault at $14.99/month, $129/year, or $649 lifetime. A 25% back-to-school sale was running in August 2026; list prices are higher—$80/year and $199 lifetime for Plottr, $699 lifetime for Pro, and $160/year and $799 lifetime for Pro + Community. No free plan, but there is a 30-day free trial. Plottr does not give refunds after purchase; instead its "Get Your Book Outlined Guarantee" offers up to five hours of personal coaching. Story Studio, Plottr's live workshop and certification arm, is priced per event and sold separately (the Certified Story Architect course runs $299).

Strengths#

• Purpose-built for plotting: Where Scrivener's outline view is one feature among dozens, Plottr's entire interface is organized around visual story planning.
• Series support: A single Plottr project holds all books in a series with shared databases for characters, locations, and events—consistently cited by multi-book authors as the key differentiator.
• Deliberately AI-free: Plottr markets "No AI" on every tier and publishes a comparison table stating it does no AI training, ships no generative AI, and neither mines nor sells personal data. For authors who don't want an unpublished series bible fed to a model, that is a stated position rather than a missing feature.
• Template library: Plot, scene, and character frameworks cover romance beats, thriller pacing, poetry forms, and character arcs, with the ability to save custom templates for reuse.

Limitations#

• No writing area: Plottr is a planning tool only. You still need Scrivener, Dabble, Word, or another editor to draft your manuscript—it's a companion tool, not an all-in-one solution.
• Cloud features cost more: Real-time collaboration, browser access, and cloud backup require Pro at $99/year. The base plan is desktop-only (Windows and Mac), syncing between your own machines through Dropbox, iCloud, or OneDrive rather than Plottr's servers.
• Pro is effectively online-only for now: Plottr's comparison table marks offline mode "Coming Soon" for both Pro tiers, and the changelog shows it still in beta as of mid-2026. The tier cards list "Work Offline" anyway—treat the comparison table as the accurate one.
• Collaborators pay separately: Every co-author, editor, or coach on a shared project needs their own Pro subscription. A two-person team is two subscriptions.
• Pro lapses lock you out: If a Pro subscription expires you lose access to your projects until you renew, so export before letting one run out. Standard (non-Pro) plans keep working after expiry, just without updates or bug fixes.
• No refunds: Purchases are final and subscriptions auto-renew with no way to disable auto-renewal yourself—you have to contact support to cancel.
• Niche use case: Only pays off for plotters writing complex or long-form projects. Short fiction or children's books don't require the kind of planning infrastructure Plottr provides.

Alternatives#

Scrivener ($59 one-time) includes a built-in outliner and drafting environment, making it better for authors who want everything in one tool. Campfire Write ($12/month for all modules) combines plotting with worldbuilding modules but lacks Plottr's timeline-first interface. Authors who outline in prose rather than visual boards may find Scrivener's corkboard mode sufficient without paying for a dedicated tool.
