Dragon Professional Individual

Dragon Professional Individual is the Windows dictation software that defined the category for two decades, and the only mainstream option that still transcribes entirely on your own machine with no cloud round-trip. Version 16.1 remains current — but Nuance has quietly stopped selling it directly, and every copy on the market now comes from a reseller.

Buying It In 2026#

Nuance no longer sells this product. There is no price, no cart, and no Buy button on any Nuance page. The product page for the "Individual" edition, nuance.com/dragon/business/dragon-professional-individual.html, now 301-redirects to Microsoft's health-solutions site. The old nuance.com/dragon.html address redirects to a page that 404s. The one surviving marketing page lists no price, offers only a "Contact us" link, and points its main call-to-action at Dragon Anywhere Mobile — a product that stopped selling on July 1, 2026.

No end-of-sale notice was ever published, and there is no Microsoft Lifecycle entry for it. Unlike Dragon Anywhere, this product was never formally discontinued. It was simply abandoned in place.

Copies are still sold by third parties at around $699, notably KnowBrainer (a long-established Dragon specialist) and Staples. Kindlepreneur's June 2026 dictation roundup lists the price as "varies by seller" rather than quoting a figure, which is a fair summary of the situation. A cluster of near-identical "Dragon store" domains also sells the same SKU without stating any Nuance authorization — buy from a retailer you recognize.

What You Get#

• Fully offline processing: All recognition runs locally. Nothing leaves the machine, which no Whisper-class cloud tool can match.
• Custom vocabulary: Train character names, invented places, and series-specific jargon that general engines mangle every time.
• Voice training and adaptation: Accuracy of roughly 99% after training, with continuous in-session adaptation to your voice.
• Voice macros: Custom spoken commands that insert boilerplate, apply formatting, or drive application menus hands-free.
• Audio file transcription: Feed in pre-recorded dictation rather than speaking live.

Who It's For#

• Authors with an existing Dragon profile: Years of voice training and a built-up series vocabulary are genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. That investment, not the feature list, is the reason to stay.
• Writers who cannot use cloud dictation: Under NDA, working on unpublished manuscripts you refuse to send to a third-party server, or simply working offline.

Pricing: Roughly $699 one-time from resellers — a market price, not a vendor-quoted one. Dragon Legal Individual v16 runs about $799. Dragon Home was discontinued in 2023, so there is no cheaper tier.

Strengths#

• Local processing is a real differentiator. Every competitor at a fraction of the price sends audio to a server.
• Deepest customization in the category. No zero-training tool offers comparable vocabulary control or macro scripting.
• Perpetual license. One payment, no subscription — against $85–$144 per year for the alternatives.

Limitations#

• No vendor storefront or purchase path. You are buying an orphaned product through intermediaries, with no first-party channel to fall back on for support or license recovery.
• Windows x86 only. Windows 10 (32/64-bit) and Windows 11 (64-bit). No ARM support is documented, so Copilot+ ARM machines are unverified. There has been no Mac version since Dragon for Mac 6 was discontinued in 2018.
• Development has ended. v16 shipped in 2023 and v16.1 is a maintenance release. Microsoft has concentrated Dragon on healthcare — Dragon Copilot is restricted to clinical care teams and offers authors nothing.
• Quality complaints in recent versions. Capterra rates it 4.0/5 across 241 reviews, with recurring reports of instability and slow support alongside the price rise from $299 to $699.99.

Alternatives#

For most Windows authors in 2026, Superwhisper ($8.49/month, $84.99/year, or $249.99 lifetime) or Wispr Flow ($15/month or $144/year) reach comparable real-world accuracy with no voice training, and both have a working purchase funnel. Superwhisper has no Android app; Wispr Flow covers Android and is free there. Windows 11's built-in Voice Typing (Win+H) costs nothing and handles short bursts, though not a full drafting session. Dragon's remaining case rests on an established voice profile or a hard offline requirement — nothing else justifies the gap.
