Buttondown

Buttondown is a bootstrapped, markdown-native newsletter platform built in 2017 by Justin Duke (former Stripe engineer) and deliberately kept small and focused. Its 0% commission on paid subscriptions, privacy-first analytics (off by default), and markdown editor make it a natural home for technically-comfortable indie authors who want full ownership of their reader relationship without platform interference.

What You Get#

• Markdown-native editor: Write in raw markdown or toggle to WYSIWYG rich text. Supports poetry blocks, pull quotes, syntax highlighting, social embeds (YouTube, Spotify, Mastodon, TikTok), and drag-and-drop import of .md/.txt/.rtf files. No template library, no drag-and-drop visual builder.
• Paid subscriptions (add-on, $9/month): 0% platform commission. Authors connect their own Stripe account — subscribers belong to the author, not Buttondown. Monthly, annual, multiple tiers, and pay-what-you-like pricing all supported. Migration from Substack or Ghost preserves paying subscribers' payment details automatically. • 2026 product updates: Announcement bars on archive pages (January 2026), automatic reply forwarding for sending-domain accounts (February 2026), custom click-tracking domains (February 2026), automatic firewall "Attack Mode" against spam surges (April 2026), and bounce-date/reason subscriber filters (April 2026).

Who It's For#

• Authors migrating from Substack: 0% commission (vs. Substack's 10%), full Stripe ownership, and easy migration of paying subscribers make this the clean break. Grew significantly during the 2024 Substack exodus.
• Privacy-conscious writers: Analytics are off by default, not opt-out. No tracking without explicit intent. Compliant with GDPR.
• Bloggers who email their readers: RSS-to-email at $9/month add-on is the lowest-friction way to send "new post" emails without a separate tool.
• Technical authors comfortable with markdown: The editor is a competitive advantage for writers who know markdown. It is a friction point for everyone else.

Strengths#

• True ownership: Subscribers and Stripe relationships belong to the author. No lock-in.
• Cost advantage vs. Substack: At $5,000/month in subscriptions, Buttondown's cost is roughly $154/month (fees + add-on) versus Substack's $500/month commission.
• Principled independence: Bootstrapped, no VC funding, Open Source Pledge member ($2,000+/developer/year back to open source). Justin Duke actively supports the platform and frequently responds to user support himself.
• RSS-to-email at the lowest cost: $9/month add-on for automatic blog-post-to-email is cheaper than most standalone RSS-to-email tools.

Limitations#

• Smallest free tier in category: 100 subscribers versus Kit's 10,000, beehiiv's 2,500, and MailerLite's 500. Authors building a list from scratch will outgrow the free plan within weeks.
• April 2026 paywall expansion: Custom transactional/confirmation emails, third-party integrations (including Zapier), and arbitrary subscriber metadata for segmentation now require a paid plan for new accounts. Existing free users are grandfathered. New free-tier signups have a thinner feature set than older ones.
• Add-on pricing is confusing and adds up: The base plan price does not include analytics, automations, paid subscriptions, or RSS-to-email. Power users easily pay $85–$120+/month despite a "Standard" $29 base plan. Multiple reviewers report feeling misled.
• No visual editor: No drag-and-drop blocks, no template library, no styled CTA buttons (HTML workaround required). Authors expecting a Mailchimp-like interface will be frustrated.

Alternatives#

Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is the mainstream author recommendation — 10,000 free subscribers, better automations, visual editor, and a large integration library. MailerLite offers stronger deliverability and a simpler free tier. For authors who specifically need the Substack migration path and want zero commission without Ghost's self-hosting complexity, Buttondown is the cleanest option.
