Ghost is an open-source publishing platform that combines a website, email newsletter, and paid membership system in a single tool. Unlike Substack — which takes 10% of subscription revenue — Ghost charges 0% commission on paid subscriber revenue. Authors pay only Stripe's standard transaction fees (2.9% + $0.30) on membership income.

Plans and Pricing (Updated July 2025)#

Ghost restructured its managed hosting service (Ghost Pro) in July 2025. Prices shown are annual billing:

All plans include: unlimited email sends, SSL certificates, automated backups, worldwide CDN, and a custom domain. No transaction fees on paid subscriptions.

Key change from July 2025: The Starter plan price increased roughly 67% (from ~$9/month) and paid subscription monetization was removed — authors who want to charge for member access need the Publisher plan or higher. Existing customers were grandfathered at prior pricing.

Self-hosted option: Ghost is MIT-licensed open-source software. Running it on your own server costs nothing for the software but requires technical setup (VPS, DNS, SSL management). Most authors use Ghost Pro for the managed hosting.

Who It's For#

• Non-fiction authors building a publication: Ghost's model suits authors who want blog posts, a newsletter, and optional paid membership tiers in one cohesive interface — think Substack's publishing experience with full platform ownership
• Authors with meaningful paid subscriber revenue: At $1,000+/month in subscriptions, Ghost's 0% commission saves significantly over Substack's 10% cut
• Authors who prioritize ownership: Ghost is open-source; subscribers and content are fully exportable, and the self-hosted option eliminates platform dependency

Fiction authors who primarily need email automation — welcome sequences, reader magnet funnels, launch drip campaigns — will find Ghost insufficient on its own. Ghost does not have a built-in email automation builder.

Email Features and Automation#

Ghost sends newsletter emails to subscribers when you publish content — effectively an automated newsletter with each new post. What Ghost does not have:

• No drip sequence builder or welcome email automation
• No behavioral triggers (open, click, date-based)
• No reader magnet delivery system

automation: false — confirmed. To set up welcome sequences or reader magnet delivery with Ghost, authors route new member data to an external tool (Kit or MailerLite are common choices) via Zapier and handle automation there. The Ghost community forum has extensive threads on this; the consistent answer is "use an external email service for sequences."

Ghost integrates with 8,000+ tools via Zapier (Publisher plan). BookFunnel and StoryOrigin both work with Ghost via Zapier, though neither has a native direct integration.

• Starter plan restrictions: As of July 2025, Starter excludes paid subscription capability and is limited to 1 newsletter — need Publisher ($29/mo) for membership monetization
• Minimal email design: Ghost's newsletter templates are simple by design; minimal customization compared to Kit or MailerLite
• No AI features: No writing assistant, subject line suggestions, or content generation tools
• BookFunnel via Zapier only: No native direct integration; requires additional setup

vs. beehiiv: beehiiv is a newsletter-first email marketing platform with automation, an ad monetization network, AI writing tools, and a more feature-rich email editor. Ghost is a full publishing platform with less email marketing sophistication. Ghost wins on platform ownership and 0% commission; beehiiv wins on email marketing capabilities and discovery features.
