Buy Me a Coffee is a streamlined creator support platform that lets authors accept reader tips, sell digital products via the Shop, and set up tiered monthly memberships — all without a monthly subscription fee. It can be live in under two minutes with no technical setup required, making it the fastest way to accept reader support.

What You Get#

• One-time tips: Readers send $1–$100+ without needing a platform account. The familiar "coffee" framing lowers the psychological barrier compared to a generic "donate" button.
• Memberships: Monthly or annual recurring tiers; creators define pricing, perks, and member limits. Includes Discord role assignments, exclusive posts, and file downloads. Lifetime membership option (single payment) added Jan 2025.

Strengths#

• Zero monthly cost: No subscription required — you only pay when you earn.
• Fast setup: The simplest creator support platform to configure. New features like Apple Pay and localized currency pricing (Nov 2024) reduce checkout friction further.
• Simple payouts: Withdraw via Stripe (Stripe Standard Connect) once you hit the $10 minimum. PayPal remains available as a supporter payment method but is no longer offered as a creator payout option.

Limitations#

• 5% fee applies to tips: Unlike Ko-fi, which charges 0% on one-time tips, Buy Me a Coffee takes 5% on every transaction including simple tips. For authors whose primary use case is a tip jar, Ko-fi is meaningfully cheaper.
• Payouts are not instant: As of 2025 all creators were migrated to Stripe Standard Connect; payouts are requested once you reach the $10 threshold and then take 3–5 business days to reach your bank. Your first payout triggers a one-time account review, so expect roughly 7–14 days total the first time. The "instant payouts" marketing claim is misleading.
• No discovery: Unlike Ko-fi's Explore tab, Buy Me a Coffee has no browsable directory. You must drive all traffic yourself.
