Mariah Sinclair Design

Mariah Sinclair designed her first book cover in 2001, then spent 14 years away from the format before opening her cover design studio in 2016 — the year her cozy mystery practice actually starts. Her covers regularly appear on Amazon's Top 100 Cozy Mystery bestseller charts, including Tonya Kappes' Criminals & Campers series, and the Creative Elements podcast episode about her (#91) is where the "Queen of Cozy" tag comes from.

Her own site gives two different cover counts: the homepage says "nearly 2000 book covers since 2016" while the About page, the FAQ and her shop bio all say "over 1,500." Both are vendor-authored and unreconciled — treat 1,500+ as the defensible floor.

What You Get#

• Custom Single Cover ($375): First-in-series ebook cover with 3 revision rounds, no stock image fees, and priority booking on her waitlist.
• Series continuations ($325 each): "Generally $325 unless additional covers only require a title change," in which case less. Same per-cover price as the Makeover Bundle.
• Makeover Bundle ($975): Three ebook covers for an existing series refresh, with a market research review. At least one book in the series must already be published — this is a rebrand product, not a launch one.
• Extras: Paperback wrap (+$50 each), hardback dust jacket (+$125), audiobook cover (+$40), 3D box set render (+$50). Extras are produced on Thursdays with a Wednesday request cutoff.
• Premades ($125–$500): Sold through her Payhip shop as themed drops. Priced by set size — a single cover is $125, a set of three $375, sets of four $400–$500. Each design is sold once only, all text changes are included in the price, and finished files land within 1–3 business days. Ebook only; print and audio versions are added later through the extras order form.

Booking#

Two separate deposits, on different terms. New custom projects: submit the inquiry form, she replies within a week, and if it's a fit she invoices a $100 booking deposit that is subtracted from the final bill. Existing clients adding to a series use the reservation scheduler instead, which takes a $50 fee per cover — also credited against the invoice, but explicitly not refunded if you cancel.

Who It's For#

• Cozy mystery authors: Sinclair works across cozy subgenres — culinary, pet, coffee shop, craft, historical, paranormal and holiday-themed — and does not design outside the cozy / paracozy / paranormal women's fiction umbrella. That focus is the point.
• Series authors refreshing backlist: The Makeover Bundle is priced specifically for authors rebranding three existing covers at once.
• Authors who want a genre specialist: A designer with 1,500+ covers in one niche reduces brief-to-output risk considerably.
• Authors who want cozy branding cheaply: The $125 single premade is the lowest-friction way into her aesthetic, though the shop is small.

Strengths#

• Genre depth: A decade focused on a single niche means she reads cozy market signals — palette trends, font shifts, seasonal lean — in real time.
• Bestseller track record: Covers chart in the Top 100 for cozy mystery, and her shop bio adds monster romance; the Tonya Kappes credit is named on her own About page.
• Transparent pricing: Every custom price, continuation price, extra and deposit is published openly, which is unusual for a solo freelancer at this experience level.
• Series economics are stated up front: Continuations at $325 and the 3-for-$975 bundle mean a multi-book author can budget the whole series before booking.

Limitations#

• Niche-only: Not a fit for thriller, epic fantasy, contemporary romance, literary fiction or non-fiction. The cozy/paranormal umbrella is the whole catalogue.
• Turnaround is not published: She commits only to answering inquiries within a week and to "currently accepting new projects"; the FAQ warns that "booking slots can fill up — especially around popular release seasons." The only production figure anywhere on her properties is the 1–3 business days for premade text changes. Confirm availability before you set a launch date.
• Premade shop is very small right now: Four designs listed at the time of checking and two of them out of stock. It restocks in drops rather than holding inventory, so browsing is a matter of timing — not a shelf you can shop on demand.
• No published rights or licensing terms: Neither the site nor the FAQ says who owns the finished artwork or what licence you get. The premade product pages confirm only that stock imagery and typefaces are licensed for commercial use, and state "no refunds or exchanges." Ask before paying.
• Dead Wix storefront: Four store categories (contemporary cozy, historical cozy, paranormal, cozy fantasy) are still indexed on her site and all four return zero products. The live shop is Payhip; ignore the on-site store.
• Solo capacity: A single-designer queue means demand can run ahead of supply during cozy release seasons.
