Jessica Bell Design

Jessica Bell is an Australian award-winning graphic designer, author and publisher based in Greece. She began designing covers in 2011 after self-publishing her own poetry collection, Twisted Velvet Chains, and has designed for indie, hybrid and traditional authors ever since. She is a Partner Member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) — the badge is embedded on every page of her site — and is also Publisher at Vine Leaves Press, the press her most popular package is explicitly modelled on.

What You Get#

• Ready-Made (€150 / ~$175): eBook cover from her premade catalogue, text changes only; +€120 (~$140) for a paperback wrap. Imagery changes and other file formats are quoted case by case.
• Publisher's Pick (€550 / ~$640): her most popular custom package — a single cover concept, three free revisions, priority/fast-track scheduling, custom typography and 3–5 branded social graphics. Paperback is a paid add-on here, not an inclusion.
• Package 1 (€700 / ~$815): three concepts, eBook JPEG + print-ready paperback PDF + 3D mockup, three revisions on the chosen design.
• Package 2 (€850 / ~$990): three concepts delivered as eBook, paperback, hardcover (laminate or dust jacket), audiobook square and 3D mockup.
• Ultimate (€2,500 / ~$2,915): everything in Package 2 plus logo, business card, website header, Facebook cover, X/Twitter header and an Instagram post, with unlimited revisions for six months from the start date.

• Publishing Mentor Program (€10,000 / ~$11,660): six months of one-to-one mentoring capped at four clients a year, bundling the Ultimate package with weekday WhatsApp access, two strategy calls a month, priority scheduling and a post-launch audit. €3,000 of it is a non-refundable deposit; the balance is €7,000 upfront or 5 × €1,400. It is a publishing partnership rather than a cover SKU, so the price ceiling above stays at the Ultimate package.

Every custom package includes unlimited licensed stock images. All work takes a 50% deposit and a signed project agreement before it starts. Files arrive as JPEG, PNG and PDF — no layered or editable source file is offered anywhere on the site. Typesetting and eBook formatting appear on her order form but are priced nowhere.

The Premade Catalogue#

Her /premades.html gallery holds 462 covers at €150 each, filterable across nine genre buckets: Memoir & Nonfiction 107, Literary & Multicultural 101, Historical 75, Thriller/Suspense/Crime & Adventure 48, Women's Fiction 44, Fantasy & Horror 29, Romance 25, Dystopian & SciFi 21, Humor 10. Previews are deliberately watermarked and low-resolution; the delivered file is clean. Ordering is by email rather than a cart.

Who It's For#

• Literary, memoir and non-fiction authors: her deepest work by a wide margin — 208 of 460 filterable premades and four of her seven cover-design awards sit in non-fiction and literary categories.
• ALLi members: the 10% discount and Partner Member designation are quality and trust signals independent of her own marketing.
• Authors who want a publisher's read on the market: she acquires and publishes at Vine Leaves Press, so the brief-reading comes from someone who also sells the books.
• Budget-conscious authors: the €150 premade line puts her within reach of authors who cannot fund a €550+ custom cover.

Strengths#

• ALLi Partner Member status, verifiable on her own site: the badge is served directly from allianceindependentauthors.org, so the claim is vendor-displayed rather than inferred from a third-party list.
• A documented, dated awards record: 2025 Literary Global Book Awards (Best Cover Design: Nonfiction), Independent Author Award 2025 (Best Cover Design: Nonfiction), 2024 IPPY Bronze (Cover Design: Fiction), FAPA President's Book Awards Silver, 2022 Wishing Shelf Bronze and 2021 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Silver — each named with the book and the year on her Accolades page.
• Full pricing published, including the add-on ladder: the paperback upgrade, social packages, revision overage rate and mentorship terms are all on the site, which is rarer among solo designers than among studios.
• Author-designer-publisher perspective: self-publishing experience as a poet and novelist plus a working press informs the brief.
• A published turnaround and queue: two to three weeks from your assigned start date, with the booking queue stated as "sometimes two months ahead" — a real figure, where most solo designers publish none.

Limitations#

• Publisher's Pick buys one concept, not three, and the site contradicts itself about it: the package card says "a single, striking cover design," while the FAQ describes house process as "a minimum of three design concepts." Only Packages 1, 2 and Ultimate name three concepts on their own cards. Confirm which you are buying before paying the deposit.
• She keeps the copyright. Terms §13 states all creative work "remain[s] the property – physically, intellectually, and in copyright, of Jessica Bell Design," and §26 licenses the design to you only for the purpose it was designed for, with no resale or transfer. You are buying a licence, not the artwork — the opposite of the full-rights transfer offered by Miblart, Creativindie or Reedsy.
• The 50% deposit is non-refundable in every scenario. The FAQ is explicit: cancel "at any time, either before or after I begin work" and the deposit is gone; Terms §23 adds a proportional invoice for work completed plus compensatory charges for booked design time. There is no satisfaction-based refund.
• Stock licence caps reproduction at 500,000 print copies (Adobe Stock standard licence), and no extended-licence price is published. Terms §20 also declines to guarantee exclusivity of any design, and nothing on the premades page says a cover is retired once sold — unusual for a premade shop, where retirement is the norm.
• Revisions past the included rounds bill at €40/hr (~$47), an hourly rate rather than a fixed per-revision price, so post-delivery changes are open-ended.
• Genre skew, not genre absence. She maintains fifteen portfolio galleries including romance, thriller and fantasy, and thriller is her fourth-deepest premade genre — so the older framing of this listing overstated the gap. The real thin spots are fantasy and magical realism (7 sample covers, the fewest of any major genre page), noir/pulp/action-adventure (3) and humour (5), and romance is the shallowest of her large premade buckets at 25 covers, weighted toward historical and Regency. Authors after contemporary or dark romance, urban fantasy or high-concept genre work will find deeper shelves at Mariah Sinclair, Rebecca Frank or Wolfsparrow.
• Currency and tax complexity: pricing is EUR and subject to VAT where applicable, so the final cost depends on your rate, your bank's fees and your tax position.
• No published AI policy. Neither an AI disclosure nor a no-AI commitment appears anywhere on the site; she describes her non-illustrated work as built on licensed Adobe Stock imagery but never addresses generative tools. ai_powered is false because nothing AI-driven is exposed to the buyer, but AI-averse authors should ask directly rather than assume.
• One person, with an outsourcing clause. Terms §16 reserves the right to commission freelance support or outsource any job, so "solo designer" is her default rather than a guarantee. The four-client-a-year mentorship and the two-month booking queue are both signs of a genuinely constrained calendar.
