Authors can generate AI images from a text prompt, start from a genre-organised template, drop in royalty-free stock photos, and set typography in a single browser workspace — no design software to install. The platform has since repositioned around a model marketplace — its pricing page now leads with "Top AI Models & Tools. One Subscription." — so a single Fotor plan brokers dozens of third-party image and video models (Seedream, Nano Banana, GPT Image, FLUX, Ideogram, Midjourney v7 and others) against one credit balance.

Pricing (US, verified 2026-08-20): Basic is free forever — watermarked JPG/PNG/PDF exports, "limited free credits" (Fotor no longer publishes the number), one concurrent generation and 512MB of storage. Pro is $10.99/month or $47.99/year ($4.00/month effective) with 100 credits a month; Pro+ is $23.99/month or $99.99/year ($8.33/month) with 300 credits. A 30% annual promotion was running on 2026-08-20, cutting Pro+ to $69.99/year ($5.83/month). A fourth tier, Fotor Max, sells credit volume rather than extra features: $49.99/month or $239.88/year for 1,000 credits a month, scaling to $1,149.99/month for 50,000. Two side ladders exist — a credits-only subscription that buys generation but no Pro features ($13.99/month for 200 credits up to $459.99/month for 10,000) and a developer line, Fotor Business Credits, at $99–$299/month. A 7-day Fotor Pro free trial is available; it converts to a paid subscription automatically, and Fotor advises cancelling at least a day early because the charge can land hours before the trial formally ends.

Strengths#

Limitations#

• AI is metered, not unlimited: Every plan carries a monthly credit allowance — 100 on Pro, 300 on Pro+, 1,000 and up on Max — and image generation spends it. Unused credits roll over for a maximum of five months while you stay subscribed; one-time credit purchases expire after two years. An author generating dozens of cover variants will hit the Pro allowance well before the month ends
• Genre fiction limitations: Romance, thriller, and fantasy covers require genre-coded imagery — specific model types, color palettes, and composition conventions — that stock-based template tools struggle to replicate convincingly
• Print setup is manual: Fotor does not automate spine width, bleed areas, or back cover layout for print; authors must calculate KDP or IngramSpark dimensions separately. Fotor's AI book cover marketing page claims you "can generate spine and back cover for your book," but no tool on the book cover maker or templates pages does this — treat the claim as unsupported
• AI output consistency: Text-to-image generation quality varies significantly by genre; fantasy and illustration-heavy styles work better than photorealistic thriller covers
• The same dollar price is not the same everywhere: Fotor quotes USD worldwide but serves different USD amounts by country — the India plan set on 2026-08-20 was Pro $8.99/month and $39.99/year against the US $10.99 and $47.99. Check the figures your own checkout shows

Alternatives#

Canva ($18/month Pro) offers a larger template library with stronger non-fiction and marketing layout options, though it meters its AI the same way.
