MacWhisper

MacWhisper runs OpenAI Whisper and Nvidia Parakeet models locally on your Mac, turning recordings into text — interviews, voice memos, Zoom calls, YouTube URLs. It also does system-wide push-to-talk dictation into any text field, covering both halves of a dictation workflow rather than just transcription.

Buy the right one: the developer ships this product twice. The direct download from macwhisper.com (checkout on Gumroad) is MacWhisper. The App Store version is Whisper Transcription and has no dictation at all — Apple's sandboxing blocks it. Meeting detection, the full AI provider list and the CLI are direct-download-only too.

What You Get#

• Local transcription in 100+ languages: Whisper and Parakeet run on your machine, so an unpublished manuscript's audio never leaves the Mac. Nothing is uploaded unless you opt into a cloud provider.
• System-wide dictation: Hold a hotkey, speak, release, and the text types into whatever field has focus. Included in the free tier; Pro adds grammar cleanup and AI prompts.
• Batch and watched folders: Drop a folder in, or point MacWhisper at one and have it transcribe whatever lands there.
• Meeting capture: Records system audio and auto-detects calls in Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype and Discord, with automatic speaker separation and .srt/.vtt subtitle export.

Who It's For#

• Authors who dictate into a phone on walks: The batch and watched-folder workflow is the strongest in this category, and speaker separation handles interviews.
• Authors who want dictation without a subscription: One payment, lifetime updates — rare in a segment that has moved almost entirely to recurring billing.

Pricing: Free forever tier — mic recording, 100+ languages, .txt/.srt/.vtt export and basic system-wide dictation. Pro is €65 one-time at the Gumroad checkout, including lifetime updates (the marketing page advertises €64). Discounted multi-seat packs exist, plus 25% off for students, journalists and nonprofits. The App Store build prices separately, with nine in-app purchases including two different Pro Lifetime prices ($89.99 and $99.99) and an optional cloud Assistant subscription at $5.99/week to $89.99/year.

Strengths#

• One-time purchase in a subscription category: Superwhisper and Wispr Flow both bill recurring; €65 once undercuts either within two years.
• Measured accuracy, not vendor claims: TidBITS tested the Large V2 model against an official NPR transcript at a 3.7% word error rate, versus 6.6% for Apple Notes — a February 2025 test, so it predates the newer models.
• Genuinely active: The App Store build was updated 2026-07-29 and the direct build is at v14.7.1, on a roughly weekly-to-fortnightly cadence — worth weighing in a category where Dragon Anywhere was discontinued and Dragon Professional Individual was quietly pulled from sale.

Limitations#

• Two products, one name: The App Store build silently lacks the headline dictation feature.
• Dictation output is raw by default: No smart lists or paragraph structuring unless you add your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key. Purpose-built dictation apps format as you speak.
• Mac-first: No Windows or Android version. The iPhone and iPad apps are the reduced App Store build — transcription only.
• "Offline" is the default, not the only mode: The optional Assistant subscription sends audio to the vendor's servers, and its own docs warn against using it with sensitive files.
• Middling store rating: 3.85/5 from 157 ratings on the US App Store. That is the reduced SKU, but it is the only review pool with a usable sample size.

Alternatives#

Superwhisper is the better buy if live dictation is the main job — cleaner formatting out of the box and a real Windows app, at $8.49/month to $249.99 lifetime. Wispr Flow is the only one of the three with an Android app. Pick MacWhisper when the work is mostly files and dictation is a bonus you are not paying extra for.
