Basic Automation

Mailchimp is the most recognized name in email marketing, owned by Intuit since 2021. For most indie authors, however, it is the wrong choice: automation requires a paid plan (from $13/month), affiliate links in emails carry a real account suspension risk, the free tier was reduced to just 250 contacts in February 2026, and paid pricing climbs steeply compared to author-focused alternatives like MailerLite or Kit.

Plans and Pricing

Mailchimp offers four tiers:

| Plan | Starting price | Contacts | Sends/month | |---|---|---|---| | Free | $0 | 250 | 500 (250/day cap) | | Essentials | $13/mo | 500–50,000 | 10x contact limit | | Standard | $20/mo | 500–100,000 | 12x contact limit | | Premium | $350/mo | 10,000–200,000 | 15x contact limit |

Pricing scales with contact count. At 10,000 contacts: Essentials is $110/month, Standard is $135/month — both well above MailerLite ($25/month at 10k) or Kit (free up to 10,000). The $350/month Premium floor makes it the highest-cost starting point of any plan in this tier category.

Hidden billing trap: For accounts created after May 2019, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts still count toward your billable contact total unless manually archived. Authors with any list churn pay for people who have already opted out.

Free Tier (February 2026)

The free plan was reduced to 250 contacts and 500 emails/month (250/day cap) effective February 17, 2026 — down from 500 contacts and 1,000 sends/month previously. Since Intuit's 2021 acquisition, the original 2,000-contact free tier has been cut by 87.5%. No automation is available on the free plan; even single welcome emails require an Essentials subscription. This is the most restrictive free tier in the email-newsletter category.

Automation

Automation (called "Marketing Automation Flows," rebranded from "Customer Journey Builder" in June 2025) is available on paid plans only. The Classic Automation Builder was discontinued in June 2025 and removed from the free tier entirely.

  • Essentials: Up to 4-step automation flows
  • Standard: Expanded flows with branching points and templates
  • Premium: Full automation with all branching options

The automation: false designation in the prior listing was misleading — Mailchimp does have meaningful automation on paid plans. The accurate framing is: no automation on the free plan; automation is a paid-plan-only feature starting at $13/month.

The policy is nuanced and widely misunderstood in author circles. Mailchimp does not outright prohibit affiliate links — but it prohibits "affiliate marketing as a business model" and automatically scans all outgoing email content for denylisted URLs. Accounts flagged for denylisted links are suspended for review; intentional violations result in permanent account closure.

In practice, Amazon Associates links and standard book affiliate links are not specifically mentioned in Mailchimp's help documentation as prohibited, and the official help article states that such links are "generally acceptable" if they appear "under your branding, be in your voice, and be relevant to your contacts." The risk is in sending links to any domain that Mailchimp has denylisted — and there is no public, searchable denylist. The community warning about affiliate links is real but better stated as: affiliate links carry account suspension risk if Mailchimp's automated scanner flags your URLs, not that they are always prohibited.

AI Features

Mailchimp has invested in AI features under the "Intuit Assist" umbrella:

  • Write with AI (Standard+ only): Generates and edits email copy, subject lines, preview text, headings, and button text via a generative AI tool. Currently in beta; available to US, UK, Canada, and Australia accounts only.
  • Content Optimizer (Standard+ only): Scores campaigns against industry benchmarks for readability, tone, imagery, and calls-to-action.
  • Send Time Optimization (Standard+): Predicts optimal send windows based on list engagement history.
  • Predictive Segmentation (Standard+): Identifies high-value subscribers using purchase and engagement behavior.
  • Subject line AI (Standard+): Suggests up to five subject line variations per campaign based on past performance data.
  • Creative Assistant (all paid plans): Automatically imports brand colors, fonts, and logos to maintain design consistency.

All meaningful AI features are Standard plan or higher ($20/month+). The free plan and Essentials plan have minimal AI support.

Integrations

Mailchimp has 300–500+ integrations — the largest integration library in email marketing. Author-relevant integrations include:

  • BookFunnel: Native direct integration for reader magnet delivery and list-building
  • Shopify, WooCommerce: E-commerce for signed editions or merch
  • WordPress: Embedded forms and site-triggered emails
  • Zapier: Bridge to thousands of additional tools
  • StoryOrigin, BookSweeps: Via Zapier

This integration breadth is the one genuine advantage Mailchimp holds over smaller, author-focused tools.

Deliverability

EmailToolTester rates Mailchimp 2.9 out of 5 overall (2026), with a deliverability infrastructure score of 3.0 out of 5 — the lowest among reviewed platforms. Specific gaps include: no centralized deliverability dashboard, no spam complaint feedback loop data, no built-in list cleaning or validation tools. A dedicated IP add-on is available for $29.95/month for high-volume senders. Independent B2B benchmark testing (The Digital Bloom, 2025) showed a 19.6 percentage point drop in inbox placement rates year-over-year.

Community Reception

Mailchimp is actively recommended against by all major author-focused resources:

  • Kindlepreneur ranks it last among tested email platforms for authors, calling it "terribly overpriced compared to Kit and MailerLite"
  • Book Promotion.com omits Mailchimp from its recommended list entirely
  • ScribeCount, Author Media, and ALLi all recommend alternatives
  • The consensus alternative recommendation is MailerLite (best value), followed by Kit (best free tier for building a list)

The community sentiment has hardened since the June 2025 automation removal from the free plan and the February 2026 free tier reduction.

Who Should Use Mailchimp

  • Legitimate use case: Authors already on Mailchimp with thousands of subscribers, deep integrations (e.g., custom Zapier workflows, Shopify store), and a team that knows the platform — migration costs may outweigh the savings
  • Not recommended for: New authors starting a list, authors on a budget, authors who include affiliate or commission-based links in newsletters, and anyone needing automation on a free plan

Recent Changes (2024–2026)

  • Feb 10, 2026: "Profitable Ecommerce Marketing" release rolled out globally — proprietary Site Tracking Pixel, expanded SMS and transactional messaging, omnichannel marketing dashboard, ChatGPT integration, and 26% more ecommerce triggers added on eligible plans (ecommerce-focused; minimal direct relevance for indie authors)
  • Feb 17, 2026: Free tier reduced to 250 contacts / 500 emails/month (from 500 contacts / 1,000 sends)
  • 2026: Intuit Assist available at no additional cost on Standard+ ($20/mo) and Premium ($350/mo); US-based accounts get earliest access
  • June 2025: Classic Automation Builder discontinued; all automation moved to paid plans via Marketing Automation Flows
  • 2024–2025: Intuit Assist AI features (Write with AI, Content Optimizer) rolled out to Standard+ plans
  • 2024: Price increases noted across tiers (specific dates not publicly documented)
  • Jan 2026: Free plan contact reduction announced (effective Feb 17, 2026)
