The Book Cover Designer

The Book Cover Designer (TBCD) is a multi-vendor premade marketplace founded in 2013 and run since May 2024 by Michael Natzmer, trading as GM MEDIA in Cologne, Germany. The live shop holds 16,421 covers from hundreds of independent designers. Two policies set it apart: a strict no-AI rule that keeps the catalog human-made, and a one-buyer guarantee — once a cover sells it is pulled permanently and never relisted.

Note that the site understates itself. Its page title still advertises "13,500 Premade Book Covers" and the homepage body says "over 10,000"; both are stale marketing copy against a catalog that is now roughly 20% larger than the higher of the two.

What You Get#

• 16,400+ exclusive designs: Each cover is sold once and then removed, giving the buyer sole use of that design composition.
• Free text customization: Your title and author name are added at no extra charge — enter them in the checkout Order Notes, or the designer will ask after purchase.
• A published add-on ladder: Most covers carry an "Extra Cover Formats" block at checkout. Prices are set per designer and typically run paperback/print wrap $30–$70, hardback or IngramSpark hardcover $36–$70, audiobook cover $20–$50, 3D mockup $10–$22, box set $29, and marketing images, teasers or social banners around $15.
• Per-cover delivery estimate: Every product page publishes its own badge, almost always "ca. 48 hours."
• No AI covers: The platform rejects AI-generated submissions and stamps "Designed by a real artist — No AI" on product pages.

Who It's For#

• Authors who need guaranteed exclusivity: The one-cover-per-buyer policy is written into the terms — the design is delisted on purchase and never sold again.
• Authors avoiding AI art: A human-only catalog is an increasingly meaningful differentiator as AI imagery spreads through cheaper premade shops.
• Budget-to-mid authors across all genres: Half the catalog sits between $49 and $120, so it competes with budget shops at the low end while its illustrated tier rivals custom studios.

Pricing: A 2,000-cover sample of the live catalog (12% of the shop) gives a floor of $8, a median of $75, and a 90th percentile of $188; roughly a quarter of covers sell at $49. The ceiling is $900 — reached both by a single illustrated romantasy cover (list $1,000, discounted) and by a four-cover set. Sub-$49 covers are real but rare, about 3% of the catalog. A broad sale was running at the time of checking: 231 of 600 sampled covers (38.5%) were discounted, median 34% off. One-time purchase per cover; no subscription. Payment is PayPal or credit card, billed in USD.

Strengths#

• True one-buyer exclusivity, backed by contract: §10.1 of the terms guarantees the finished composition is exclusive and "will never be licensed or sold to another customer."
• No-AI guarantee stated on the storefront itself, not buried in terms — and individual product pages carry designer-written clauses forbidding resale and machine-learning use of the artwork.
• Genre depth is genuinely deep, not just broad. Live per-genre counts: mystery 5,570, fantasy 5,225, thriller/suspense 4,590, action/adventure 4,445, romance 4,409, young adult 3,222, paranormal 2,493, horror 2,360, literary fiction 1,686, chick lit 1,578, sci-fi 1,194, dystopia 966, historical fiction 816, non-fiction 789, erotica 672, children's 266, steampunk 171, cozy 140, comedy 63. Genres overlap, so these do not sum to the catalog total.
• A 14-day EU right of withdrawal exists for consumers under the German operator's cancellation policy, exercisable through an on-site withdrawal form.

Limitations#

• The refund position is contradictory, and the weaker answer is the one you will meet. The FAQ says flatly "No refunds will be given except at our discretion," while the terms grant consumers a 14-day withdrawal right. That right lapses as soon as delivery begins with your consent, and the terms define a "consumer" as someone acting for non-commercial purposes — which excludes most authors publishing to sell. Treat purchases as effectively final.
• The stock photography is not exclusive. The FAQ and terms both say so: the design is one-of-a-kind, but the underlying stock images may appear in other designers' work elsewhere, and the platform disclaims liability if someone independently builds a similar cover from the same assets.
• Print-run licence caps at 250,000 copies — below the 500,000 that is standard for stock photo licences elsewhere in this category. Past that you must buy an extended licence, its cost cannot be quoted in advance because it depends on which stock agency each image came from, and monitoring your own sales against the cap is explicitly your responsibility.
• No source files, and no instant download. Delivery is high-res PNG and PDF sized for KDP; designers generally refuse layered files. Covers are emailed after the text is set, so expect 24–48 hours in practice and up to 72 by the FAQ's own backstop.
• Everything past the base cover is per-designer, including the add-on ladder. Some covers publish no add-ons at all, and back-cover/spine work is answered "It depends" — you are told to contact the designer before buying. Authors also report being unable to reach the original designer months later for a print or hardback version, because designers leave the platform.
• Almost no independent review signal. The 5.0/5 from 101 reviews on every page is the site's own widget. The Knoji profile a previous version of this listing cited is now 410 Gone, the SmartCustomer (ex-Sitejabber) page holds zero reviews, and there is no Trustpilot profile for the domain — several similarly named services do have one, which makes third-party scores easy to misattribute here.
• German law governs and the operator declines consumer arbitration, which raises the cost of any dispute for non-EU authors.

Alternatives#

BookCovers.com (roughly 80,000 listings, $35–$299) offers far more volume and instant download, but permits AI elements in covers and adds $149 for a full print wrap. GoOnWrite has the largest single-designer library (5,000+) but guarantees no delivery time. Rocking Book Covers keeps a much smaller catalog (~3,000, $40–$200) consistent by using one designer, and is stronger for thriller and crime specifically.
