Scribophile

Scribophile is a structured online writing workshop founded in 2007 by Alex Cabal, and one of the most active peer critique communities on the web. The platform operates on a karma system: members earn karma points by writing critiques for others, then spend those points — 5 per submission — to post their own work for review. Both free and premium members must earn karma to post, which guarantees reciprocal participation and filters out passive users.

Karma System#

Every work submission costs 5 karma points. Members earn karma by critiquing others, with the most points earned by critiquing works featured in the Main Spotlight. Critique length matters — detailed feedback earns more. Reviewers also accumulate small amounts when others click positive reaction buttons on their critiques: thorough, constructive, enlightening, and encouraging. Premium members can offer bonus karma as an incentive to attract more reviewers to their work.

Works are capped at approximately 4,000 words per submission; longer manuscripts are split into parts and submitted in sequences.

Free vs. Premium#

The Basic (free) plan allows up to 2 works posted simultaneously, a limited message inbox, and community forum access. Premium membership is $15/month, or annual billing advertised as "two months free" — by the vendor's own monthly rate that works out to roughly $150/year, though some third-party listings cite a lower figure (the annual dollar amount only appears after a checkout toggle). Premium unlocks:

The Writing Academy is free and accessible to anyone, no account required. It covers eight topic areas: writing fundamentals, elements of storytelling, story structure, character development, point of view, writer's toolbox, poetry, and publishing. Hundreds of articles address topics from grammar basics through querying agents and formatting manuscripts for self-publication. This is one of the most substantive free writing education resources available in any critique community.

Community Features#

Scribophile has over 100 genre and interest-based groups, including a dedicated group for self-published authors ("Self-Pubbed"), a harsh-critique-style group ("The Brutal Butchers"), and private invitation-only groups that members can form. Weekly writing challenges, member-sponsored contests, daily writing sprints, and active forums round out the platform. The inline critique tool lets members highlight and comment directly within posted text — frequently cited as superior to document-based feedback exchanges.

AI Policy#

Scribophile enforces a strict zero-tolerance AI policy: any AI-generated or AI-assisted content, including writing, forum posts, or profile images, results in immediate deletion and a permanent ban. The platform published a formal position statement in February 2025 and markets itself as a "real creative community — never AI."

Alternatives#

Critique Circle is the closest direct competitor — older (2003), also uses a points system, and allows higher posting volume per week.
