Cash App Taxes is the only major tax filing service where both federal and one state return are genuinely free for everyone — including self-employed authors filing Schedule C. There are no paid tiers, no upgrade prompts, and no income limits. The service was originally Credit Karma Tax (acquired by Block, Inc. in 2020 for $50M as a DOJ condition of the Intuit/Credit Karma merger) and has maintained its free-always model since 2016.

A Cash App account is required to file — the service is not accessible without one.

What Authors Can File

Schedule C (self-employment profit and loss) is fully supported. Authors can deduct:

  • Book production costs (editing, cover design, formatting, ISBNs)
  • Advertising and marketing (Amazon Ads, BookBub, newsletter platforms, ARC services)
  • Home office expenses (Form 8829 — both simplified $5/sq ft method and actual expense method)
  • Business software and subscriptions (writing tools, publishing software, research databases)
  • Professional development (courses, craft books, conference registration)
  • Professional services (accountant fees, attorney fees)
  • Equipment and supplies (computer, desk, printer, external drives)
  • Phone and internet (business-use portion)
  • Business travel (research trips, author conferences, book signings)

Schedule SE (self-employment tax) and the 50% SE deduction are auto-calculated. Form 1099-NEC income — which Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, and other distributors issue to authors — is reported through Schedule C.

Other commonly used forms are supported: W-2, Schedule A (itemized deductions), Schedule D (capital gains including crypto), Schedule E (pass-through royalty income), HSA contributions, IRA contributions, education credits, and earned income credit.

Key Features

  • Genuinely free: $0 federal + $0 for one state return, every year — no income limit, no form restrictions, no catch
  • Free audit defense: Provided through Tax Protection Plus (third-party). Includes document organization, IRS correspondence drafting, and hearing representation at hearings — at no cost. Most competing free options either omit audit support or charge for it.
  • Maximum refund guarantee: If you get a larger refund elsewhere, Cash App pays $100 (as a Cash App gift card)
  • Accuracy guarantee: If a Cash App calculation error triggers IRS penalties, they cover up to $1,000 (as a Cash App gift card)
  • Prior year import: Import returns from TurboTax, H&R Block, or TaxAct via PDF upload; or carry forward automatically from last year's Cash App return
  • Pre-filing review: Automated error check and missed-deduction scan before you submit

Limitations Authors Should Know

  • Single state only: Cannot file in two states or handle part-year state returns. If you moved mid-year or earned income in multiple states, this tool cannot handle your state filing.
  • No 1099 import: All 1099 forms — including 1099-NEC royalty statements — must be entered manually. There is no bulk import or photo capture for 1099s.
  • No Form 2210: Self-employed authors who underpaid quarterly estimated taxes cannot calculate or file their underpayment penalty with Cash App Taxes.
  • No CPA or enrolled agent access: Support is email and live chat only. There is no option to have a tax professional review your return at any price point.
  • Guarantee payouts are gift cards: Both the $100 refund guarantee and $1,000 accuracy guarantee pay out as Cash App gift cards, not cash.
  • Deduction guidance is moderate: The software covers all standard deduction categories but does not proactively surface less-obvious deductions the way TurboTax Self-Employed does. Authors who are not already tax-savvy may miss some write-offs.

How It Compares to FreeTaxUSA

Both offer free federal Schedule C filing. The key differences:

  • State filing: Cash App = free one state; FreeTaxUSA = $15.99 per state (federal always free)
  • Multi-state support: FreeTaxUSA supports it; Cash App does not
  • Deduction guidance: FreeTaxUSA provides more detailed explanations and better deduction discovery
  • Audit support: Cash App includes it free; FreeTaxUSA charges for it
  • CPA access: Neither includes it free; FreeTaxUSA offers paid access ($44.99); Cash App does not offer it at any price

For a single-state author with straightforward self-employment income who wants to pay $0 for everything — including state filing — Cash App Taxes wins on cost. For more complex situations or authors who want stronger deduction guidance, FreeTaxUSA is the stronger choice even at $15.99 for state.
