Kobo Writing Life (KWL) is Rakuten Kobo's free direct-upload platform for indie audiobooks. It puts titles into both the standard Kobo store and Kobo Plus — the subscription service active in 28 countries — without exclusivity requirements or upload fees, making it a meaningful complement to any audiobook distribution strategy.

What You Get#

• Dual store placement: Every upload appears in the standard Kobo store (a-la-carte purchase) and is eligible for inclusion in Kobo Plus, the subscription service available in Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Japan, and 23 more countries as of January 2026.
• Two royalty structures: 45% of list price on direct purchases (minimum list price $2.99 USD). 32% of list price per token download on Kobo Plus. Unlike Audible's KENPC model, Kobo Plus pays per minute listened — not contingent on a completion threshold — so short listens still generate royalties.
• AI narration accepted: KWL accepts AI-narrated titles. Disclose this in metadata by attributing the narrator as "Synthesized Voice," "Female Synthesized Voice," or "Male Synthesized Voice."
• Promotional access: Uploading directly makes titles eligible for Kobo's audio merchandising team campaigns, seasonal sales, and Audiobook Month (June) features. Authors distributing through aggregators may not receive equivalent promotional consideration.
• Flexible territory control: Set availability per country at upload. Opt out of Kobo Plus in specific territories at any time without affecting a-la-carte availability.

Who It's For#

• Authors already on Kobo for ebooks: Adding the audiobook to the same KWL dashboard keeps your catalog and pricing controls in one place.
• Non-US/Non-UK authors: Unlike ACX, KWL is open to authors globally — no residency restriction on who can upload.
• Authors targeting Kobo's international markets: Kobo's customer base is strongest in Canada, Europe, and Australia — markets where Audible's dominance is weaker and direct Kobo relationships matter more.

Pricing: Free to upload and distribute. No setup fee, no per-title fee, no annual subscription.

Strengths#

• International footprint: Kobo competes meaningfully with Audible in Canada, the Netherlands, and parts of Asia-Pacific. KWL direct uploads are the highest-royalty path to those markets.
• Fair streaming model: Kobo Plus pays for every minute listened, a more author-friendly structure than completion-threshold models. Useful for authors whose readers sample heavily or finish slowly.
• No lock-in: Publish on ACX, Voices by INaudio, and every other platform simultaneously with no penalty.

Limitations#

• Kobo-only reach: KWL distributes to Kobo and Kobo Plus exclusively. Reaching Audible, Apple Books, Spotify, Scribd, and library platforms requires a separate distribution path — either ACX or an aggregator like Voices by INaudio or Author's Republic.
• Small US market share: Kobo's US audiobook footprint is limited. Going direct to KWL provides the most value for authors whose audience is already active on Kobo or located outside the US.
• Technical requirements: Individual audio files must not exceed 200MB; the complete audiobook must not exceed 2GB total. Cover images must be square, minimum 600×600px in JPEG or PNG format. Files must be uploaded in chapter order.

Alternatives#

Author's Republic distributes to 40+ platforms including Kobo in a single upload, but going direct to KWL typically unlocks better promotional access from Kobo's merchandising team. ACX is Audible's direct upload channel and the highest-revenue single platform for US authors — ACX and KWL together cover both major audiobook ecosystems.
