Author's Republic

Author's Republic is a free audiobook production and distribution platform that gives indie authors and small publishers access to more than 50 retail, streaming, and library channels worldwide — a larger partner network than any other commission-based aggregator. There are no listing fees, no submission fees, and no annual charges. The platform keeps 20% of what it collects from retail partners; authors receive the remaining 80%. The 80% rate began as a promotion for audiobooks submitted between May 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025 and was afterwards made permanent for newly submitted audiobooks. Titles first submitted before May 1, 2024 were never migrated and stay on the legacy 70% rate, so a pre-2024 backlist runs two royalty rates in one account.

Royalty Structure#

The 80% royalty applies to Author's Republic's "net receipts" — meaning the money the platform actually collects from each retail or library partner, not the consumer-facing list price. Retail partners typically pay Author's Republic 50–70% of list price (depending on the retailer), and Author's Republic then passes 80% of that amount to the author. In practical terms, this means an author selling a $17.99 audiobook can expect to net roughly $6–$8 per sale, depending on which channel the listener purchased through.

Library channels pay on different models: either a per-checkout rate (Cost Per Checkout, or CPC) or a bulk licensing model (One Copy/One User, OC/OU). Author's Republic notes that library per-unit earnings often run 4–6x higher than standard retail sales due to bulk purchasing structures.

Important note on the rate history: Prior to the May 2024 promotional offer, the standard non-exclusive Author's Republic rate was 70% of net receipts. The 80% rate was introduced as a limited-time promotion in May 2024 and was made permanent as of February 28, 2025. Some third-party guides published before this change still cite the old 70% figure — these are outdated.

Distribution Network#

Author's Republic distributes to 50+ channels across three categories:

Major retail and streaming platforms: Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube Music Premium, NOOK Audiobooks (Barnes & Noble), Kobo, Rakuten, Books-A-Million, Chirp, Libro.fm, Audiobooks.com, AudiobookSTORE.com, Speechify, Scribd/Everand, Storytel, BookBeat, Bookmate, Downpour, Deezer, Nextory, Anyplay, Ubook, YouScribe, Wehear, Audioteka, Napster, Mofibo, Calm Radio, Kids.Radio Inc, Behear, CLIQ Digital, BOOK☆WALKER Global, and others.

Library channels: OverDrive (Libby), Hoopla, Bibliotheca, 3Leaf Group, 3M, Follett, Mackin, ODILO, diviBib (Onleihe), Wheelers. Library access is a meaningful differentiator — ACX exclusive authors cannot reach these channels at all.

International platforms: Rahva Raamat (Estonia), Ubook (Latin America), Wehear, and others, making Author's Republic one of the better options for authors with significant international audiences.

Distribution is not all-or-nothing. Retailers are grouped into three buckets — Amazon/Audible, Retail Distributors, and Music Channel Distributors — and any of the three can be deselected inside the account before a project is submitted for review (verified on the vendor FAQ and partners page, 2026-08-27). Excluding one specific retailer is the part that still requires emailing support before submission, so control is coarser than Voices by INaudio's channel-by-channel toggles but not absent.

Chirp Audiobook Deals Integration#

Author's Republic has a direct partnership with Chirp (powered by BookBub), the leading audiobook deal newsletter. Authors can submit titles for Chirp Audiobook Deals directly from the Author's Republic dashboard under Marketing > Promotional Opportunities. Chirp's editorial team reviews submissions 1–2 months before the deal would go live and evaluates three factors: book content and platform quality (reviews, ratings, awards), audio quality (sample listened), and narrator reputation. Acceptance is not guaranteed.

If selected, the audiobook appears in Chirp's promotional emails and website at a discounted price, targeting readers who have opted in based on genre interests. This is a meaningful marketing lever for authors looking to drive backlist sales or launch a new title.

Narrator Marketplace and Production Services#

Author's Republic offers three paths to a finished audiobook:

1. Narrator marketplace (self-serve): Upload your manuscript (EPUB or PDF) and a sample script. Narrators browse projects, audition, and submit bids. You select a narrator based on their performance and price. Narrator rates typically run $50–$400 per finished hour (PFH). A standard novel (roughly 60,000–80,000 words, approximately 6–8 finished hours) will typically cost $300–$3,200 depending on the narrator's experience and reputation. Author's Republic charges no additional fee for using the marketplace — production cost goes directly to the narrator.

2. Managed production service: Author's Republic assigns a production manager who selects a narrator, oversees the recording and editing process, and delivers finished files. This is a full-service option for authors who don't want to manage the production side.

3. Direct upload: Authors who have already produced their audiobook — whether through a studio, a home recording setup, or another production platform — can upload finished files directly for distribution. This is the most common path for authors coming from ACX or other platforms.

AI Narration Support#

Author's Republic began testing distribution of AI voice-narrated audiobooks in 2024–2025. AI-narrated titles are accepted, but not all retail and library partners permit AI narration on their platforms. Author's Republic follows the Audio Publishers Association's AI Narration Naming Guidelines and requires proper labeling of AI-narrated content. The platform explicitly states it does not use submitted audiobooks for AI model training. AI narration is not part of Author's Republic's own production workflow — the platform only distributes AI-narrated files produced externally.

Technical Requirements#

Audio files must meet specific standards for acceptance:

• MP3 format at 192 kbps, 44.1 kHz, constant bit rate
• Each file maximum 119 minutes in length (one chapter per file)
• Loudness levels: -23 dB to -18 dB RMS; peaks no higher than -3 dB
• Cover art: minimum 2400x2400 pixels, JPEG, RGB color mode, under 8 MB

No ISBN is required to distribute through Author's Republic. The platform also provides free ISBNs that can be used across other platforms for the same title.

Payment and Reporting#

Royalties are paid monthly. A July 9, 2026 platform update moved payment-profile management (banking details, mailing address, tax forms) self-serve into My Account → Payment Account Information → Step 2 and expanded the rails to PayPal, ACH, local bank transfer, wire transfer and cheque, with availability depending on country of residence. PayPal remains the fastest and pays out once $10 has accumulated; wire transfers may carry a $100 USD minimum because of transaction fees. Wise is available on request but off by default, and changing tax classification between SSN and EIN still needs support. Distribution partners have varying reporting schedules — some remit within 30 days of month-end, others 30 days after the quarter closes, which means total channel reporting can lag by up to four months.

Promotional codes (for free review copies or giveaways) are available in unlimited quantities from the author dashboard at no charge.

Strengths#

Limitations#

• Royalty is of net receipts, not list price — effective earnings per copy are lower than the 80% headline suggests; some third-party guides cite this as misleading
• Only three-group channel control is self-serve (Amazon/Audible, Retail Distributors, Music Channel Distributors) — excluding one specific retailer means emailing support before you submit, unlike Voices by INaudio's per-channel toggles
• Lack of transparency on exact agreements with individual retail partners
• Price change friction — adjusting suggested list prices requires contacting support rather than a self-serve dashboard update
• No built-in marketing guarantees — Chirp submission acceptance is at editorial discretion
• Trustpilot rating is thin — 5 reviews (3.8/5 as of early 2026), not a meaningful sample size; mixed anecdotally on support consistency
• AI narration is partial — not all 50+ partner channels accept AI-narrated content

Alternatives#

• ACX: Best if Audible exclusivity and the highest Audible royalty (50% since May 2026, paid on pooled Member Value) is the priority; not suitable for going wide
• Voices by INaudio: Comparable distribution (40+ channels), same 80% rate, better per-channel control; no narrator marketplace
