She Writes Press

She Writes Press is a selective hybrid publisher that takes only women-identifying authors, founded in 2012 by Kamy Wicoff and Brooke Warner and now 1,300 signed authors deep. Since August 1, 2024 its titles have been pitched to the book trade by Simon & Schuster Distribution Services, which opens review channels — Publishers Weekly, Kirkus — that usually close to hybrid releases.

What You Get#

• One package, one number: $12,000 all-inclusive as of January 2026. There is no ladder, no add-on tier, and no invite-only rung above it.
• Included in that price: cover design, interior formatting up to 100,000 words, ebook conversion to 127 retailers, final-manuscript proofreading, Library of Congress copyright registration, warehousing with no storage fees, fulfillment, metadata, and bookstore and library preselling.
• Simon & Schuster Distribution Services: announced November 2023, live since August 2024. S&S fulfills bookstore orders from either a print run or print-on-demand.
• A real submission filter: $40 fee, first 50 pages plus synopsis and chapter summaries, decision in six to eight weeks on a green/yellow/red-light system.
• A narrow rights grant: SWP publishes the paperback and ebook under its own imprint and ISBNs. Foreign, audiobook, and derivative rights stay negotiable or author-retained, and an author can exit by emailing the publisher.

Who It's For#

• Women authors of literary fiction, memoir, and narrative nonfiction writing for review coverage rather than volume.
• Authors with working capital, since print runs are fronted on top of the package price.
• Not for genre-volume publishers. One imprint, biannual payments, no fast iteration.

Pricing: $12,000, up from $10,000, plus the $40 submission fee. Billed separately: copyediting (only proofreading is in the package), print runs at roughly $3–$4 per unit offset with 500 copies recommended, shipping, stock images beyond a $1,000 allowance, a $250 kill fee on a cover rejected after two rounds, and $80/hour for post-layout design changes.

Ownership: SWP joined The Stable Book Group in March 2025 as a founding imprint alongside Trafalgar Square Books, Ulysses Press, and VeloPress, with Brooke Warner as the collective's COO. The move ended the SparkPoint Studio collaboration and shuttered sibling imprint SparkPress, which publishes only through 2026.

Strengths#

• The royalty split is published and its base is defined. Authors keep 60% of net on print and 70% on ebooks, and SWP's author portal defines net as 50% of list — a disclosure most hybrid publishers never make.
• It publishes the unflattering math too. SWP's own worked example lands at $2.41–$3.41 profit per trade-sold paperback.
• The AI policy is written down. No AI in editorial, production, design, or covers; authors must disclose AI use in drafting; every copyright page carries a "NO AI TRAINING" clause.
• Verifiable award record. SWP titles have taken IPPY medals across multiple years, and in 2019 it was the first hybrid imprint named Independent Publisher of the Year by the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Limitations#

• "60% of net" is not 60% of your money. On a $17.99 paperback: $8.99 net, minus $3–$4 print cost, minus SWP's $3.58 fee.
• Copyediting is not included at a $12,000 price point, and the author fronts every print run.
• Payment is slow. Earnings are paid biannually, within ninety days of the June 30 and December 31 quarter closes; the public FAQ advertises only quarterly statements.
• Not BBB-accredited despite an A+ letter grade, and no acceptance rate is published anywhere — the 17–22% figures circulating online are outside arithmetic, not SWP's number.

Alternatives#

Greenleaf Book Group is the premium nonfiction equivalent — its own distribution, no published pricing. Atmosphere Press and Koehler Books cost less and take any author, but neither has a trade sales force. SparkPress, the obvious non-gendered sibling, closes after 2026.
