Kobo Writing Life is Rakuten Kobo's direct self-publishing platform, giving indie authors access to the Kobo store and its retail and library partners in 190+ countries. Kobo's value is geographic. Its US share is small, but it powers the ebook offering at national bookseller chains — Chapters Indigo in Canada, Fnac in France, Spain and Portugal, Bol in the Netherlands and Belgium, Angus & Robertson, Collins and Booktopia in Australia, La Feltrinelli and Mondadori in Italy, Rakuten in Japan — which is exactly where KDP exclusivity leaves revenue uncaptured. In its home market, BookNet Canada's *Canadian Leisure & Reading Study 2025* found 16% of Canadian ebook readers used Kobo, fourth behind Kindle (31%), a web browser (25%) and Google Books (22%).

## What You Get

- **Direct ebook publishing:** Upload EPUB or a manuscript for free EPUB conversion; titles appear on Kobo and partner stores within 24–72 hours, with no aggregator in between
- **Audiobook support:** Upload audiobooks directly through the KWL dashboard; Kobo accepts AI narration provided the narrator credit reads "Synthesized Voice," "Female Synthesized Voice" or "Male Synthesized Voice"
- **Library distribution:** Opt ebooks into OverDrive, which serves 92,000+ public libraries, schools, universities and corporations across 115 countries, under either a one-copy/one-user or a cost-per-circulation model
- **Kobo Plus:** Kobo's non-exclusive all-you-can-read-and-listen subscription, live in 34 regions after a May 2026 expansion into Czechia, Greece, Luxembourg, the Philippines, Poland and Romania
- **Promotional tools:** Daily Deal and Double Daily Deal homepage spots, price drops, promo-code sales and Buy More Save More bundles, applied for through the dashboard's Promotions tab
- **Regional pricing:** Set list prices per currency and market rather than letting Kobo auto-convert one base price

## Who It's For

- **Wide-distribution authors:** Those already on KDP who want revenue from non-Amazon territories without routing through an aggregator's 10% commission — going direct is 70% of list on Kobo versus the 60% Draft2Digital pays on the same sale
- **Authors selling into Kobo's partner markets:** Canada, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Mexico, Taiwan and Japan all have named Kobo-powered storefronts; a direct account is what puts you in them
- **Library-friendly genres:** Mystery, romance and fantasy borrow heavily through OverDrive, and KWL's direct opt-in avoids an aggregator taking a cut of library sales
- **Authors pricing above $12.99:** Kobo's 70% band has no upper price limit, so box sets and long nonfiction keep the full rate at prices where KDP drops to 35%

## Pricing

Free. No setup fee, no monthly subscription, no per-title charge, and Kobo takes no commission on ordinary sales beyond the published royalty split.

The one paid element is **merchandising**. Promotions carry a participation cost of either a flat fee paid upfront via a payment link, or an extra percentage of royalties deducted during the promotional window — most commonly 10%, though some promotions run at 0%. The percentage option only costs you anything if the title sells. The Promotions tab is English-language titles only, and Kobo's merchandising team approves or declines each submission.

## Royalty Structure

| Sale type | Author share |
|---|---|
| Ebook at or above the currency threshold | 70% of list price |
| Ebook below the threshold | 45% of list price |
| Audiobook à la carte, at or above threshold | 45% of list price |
| Audiobook à la carte, below threshold | 35% of list price |
| Audiobook sold via prepaid subscription token | 32% of list price |
| Kobo Plus (ebook or audiobook) | 60% of the value per minute consumed |
| OverDrive library, one copy/one user | 50% of the USD library price |
| OverDrive library, cost per circulation | 10% of the OCOU price per ebook checkout (5% for audiobooks), $0.99 minimum |

The 70% threshold is set per currency — $2.99 USD, CAD, AUD and NZD, £1.99 GBP, €1.99 EUR, ¥299 JPY, ₹149.99 INR and so on — and there is no upper price cap on the 70% rate. One condition the marketing pages omit: the Terms of Service also require the ebook to be priced at least 20% below the list price of every physical edition to qualify for 70%.

Kobo Plus pays out of a monthly pool. Kobo divides total subscription revenue by the total minutes all subscribers read that month to get a value per minute, then pays 60% of that value for every minute spent in your book — including re-reads and abandoned reads, with no 10%-of-the-book threshold to clear.

Payment is by **electronic funds transfer to your bank account only**; Kobo does not pay to PayPal or Payoneer. Royalties are sent 45 days after the sales month closes, on the 15th, once your account has accrued **CAD $50**; below that, earnings roll over. Kobo pays in USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AUD, NZD or HKD, defaulting to USD where none of those apply.

## Strengths

- **No delivery fees:** KDP deducts up to $0.15/MB per ebook sale from royalties; Kobo pays the full 70% of list price regardless of file size — meaningful for illustrated books or heavily formatted ebooks
- **No ceiling on the 70% band:** KDP raised its 70% cap to $12.99 in July 2026 and still drops to 35% above it; Kobo pays 70% at any price at or above $2.99, which is a real advantage for omnibuses and premium nonfiction
- **Non-exclusive throughout:** Publish simultaneously on Amazon, Apple Books and everywhere else; even Kobo Plus enrollment carries no exclusivity, unlike Kindle Unlimited
- **Direct library pipeline:** OverDrive opt-in from the KWL dashboard at 50% of your own library price, with no aggregator commission in between
- **No AI training on your books:** Kobo's published position is that it does not feed books into any LLM and does not use books to train LLMs; its machine learning is confined to moderation, metadata and discovery
- **Audiobook publishing:** One of the few direct retail storefronts that accepts indie audiobook uploads at all, and it accepts AI narration with disclosure

## Limitations

- **US market share is small:** Amazon and Apple Books dominate US ebook sales; Kobo is unlikely to generate meaningful US revenue for most authors and shouldn't be prioritised over KDP for an American audience
- **Ebooks and audiobooks only:** Kobo states plainly that it offers no paperback, hardcover or print-on-demand service — you need IngramSpark, KDP Print or another POD provider for physical books
- **Audiobooks do not reach libraries:** The OverDrive opt-in is ebook-only; Kobo's audiobook FAQ says library distribution is unavailable "at this time"
- **Bank transfer only, CAD $50 threshold:** No PayPal or Payoneer, and the threshold is denominated in Canadian dollars — small catalogues can sit below it for months before a payout clears
- **Promotion slots cost money and are gated:** Featured placement requires an application, a flat fee or ~10% royalty haircut, and merchandising approval; the tab is English-only and may need to be enabled by author care
- **Content restrictions are enforced:** Kobo no longer accepts new public domain works, rejects "content generated primarily by automated tools that lacks genuine human effort," and bars low-content books such as journals, notebooks and planners; erotica must be self-categorised correctly, with no explicit material in covers or descriptions
- **No opt-out of TTS or annotation export:** Since June 2025 readers can have Kobo apps read titles aloud with device voices and export up to 600 characters per highlight; authors currently cannot opt out of either
- **Large catalogues get reviewed:** Accounts pushing past roughly 500 titles may be flagged for review before further uploads
- **Reporting lags:** Audiobook sales don't appear on the main dashboard at all — only in monthly reports filtered by content type — and Kobo Plus earnings are estimates refreshed monthly

## Alternatives

For authors who prefer managing one account rather than separate retailer relationships, Draft2Digital distributes to Kobo alongside Apple, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords from a single upload, taking 10% of list price — so a Kobo sale pays 60% instead of the 70% you'd earn direct, and D2D added a $20 activation fee and a $12/yr maintenance fee for low-earning accounts in 2026. For US-focused authors enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, KDP Select's 90-day exclusivity puts the ebook off the table entirely, though print and audio editions remain free to distribute — including Kobo audiobooks.
