Bookvault

Bookvault is a UK print-on-demand platform built around premium finishes at quantity one: foiling, sprayed edges, custom endpapers, ribbons, and slipcases that elsewhere require an offset run of 500 copies or more. It is run by Peterborough-based CopyTECH (UK) Ltd, trading as Printondemand-worldwide since 1995.

What You Get#

• Special-edition finishes on single copies: Foiling from £2.50 per copy, sprayed edges from £5, custom endpapers from £1.50, ribbons and head/tail bands £1 each, box sets from £10. Lulu, IngramSpark, and Blurb offered none of these at quantity one as of August 2026.
• Direct-sales integrations: Shopify, WooCommerce, Payhip, and Wix plugins route orders straight from your own storefront, plus a public API.
• Two retail routes: The Great British Book Shop feeds Amazon, Gardners, and Alibris. Bookvault Shop, a reader-facing marketplace launched 18 June 2026, is a separate toggle under Manage Distribution.
• Bindings beyond the POD norm: Perfect-bound paperback, case-bound hardcover, saddle stitch, wire-O, spiral, and cloth-bound bespoke hardbacks, in trims from A6 up to 297mm square.
• Regional printing: Bookvault's own facility is in the UK, with print partners covering the US, Canada, and, since 2026, Australia. Everywhere else, including the EU, ships from Peterborough.

Who It's For#

• Kickstarter and crowdfunding creators: Backer tiers promising foiled covers and sprayed edges are printable with no minimum order, and fulfilment runs as one bulk job after the campaign funds.
• Authors selling from their own website: You set the price, take full payment through your own checkout, and pay Bookvault only production and shipping.
• UK-based authors: Domestic printing, GBP pricing, and Gardners distribution give the shortest supply chain to a UK readership.

Pricing: The free myBookvault plan charges £19.95 (~$25) per title uploaded and carries 3–10% bulk discounts. Indie at £24.95/month cuts the setup fee to £4.95. Pro at £89.95/month removes it entirely and adds 3–15% bulk discounts, discounted rush printing, and advanced reporting. ALLi and IBPA members receive free monthly upload codes. Per-copy print cost is quoted per specification through Bookvault's quote tool; no standard rate card is published.

Strengths#

• Direct sales carry no commission: On Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, and Payhip orders the only deduction is print and fulfilment cost, so the full markup stays with the author.
• Special editions without a print run: Finishes that historically meant committing capital to 500+ offset copies are available on a single unit, which is what makes reward-tier fulfilment viable for a first campaign.

Limitations#

• Print only: No ebook or audiobook distribution, so wide digital reach needs a separate aggregator.
• No published royalty rate on retail channels: The Great British Book Shop and Bookvault Shop deduct roughly a 5% distribution fee, a 5% retailer fee (up to 15% during promotions), and production cost from RRP. The parent company's own worked example (£10 RRP, 35% trade discount, £5 production) nets the author £1.50, or 15% of list. Use the quote calculator per title.
• Kickstarter fulfilment is manual: No BackerKit or Kickstarter API integration exists. Backer data is exported and re-uploaded through the bulk order import tool.
• New EU customs cost: Since 1 July 2026, EU-bound orders carry a flat €3 duty plus a 4% carrier deferment fee, charged once per order.
• Review scores softened during 2026: Trustpilot sits at 3.9/5 across roughly 93 reviews as of August 2026, down from 4.2/5 across 72 in May. Complaints cluster on clamp marks and laminate cracking, inconsistent colour on photo pages, and slow support replies.
• Regional catalogues differ: Not every trim size, paper stock, or finish is printable at the US, Canada, or Australia partners; check the quote tool first if your market is outside the UK.

Alternatives#

Lulu charges no setup fee and prints cheaper at standard specs, but offers nothing comparable on finishes. IngramSpark is the better choice when bookstore and library trade reach matters more than production, since Bookvault has neither. For a sprayed-edge hardback sold from your own site there is no equivalent, so Bookvault usually sits alongside a wide distributor rather than replacing one.
