Amazon Advertising puts books in front of shoppers actively browsing on Amazon — the platform where, by Amazon's own figure, 77% of book buyers discovered a new title or author while shopping there. Two self-serve formats are available directly from the KDP dashboard; a third, Kindle lockscreen inventory, moved to Amazon DSP in April 2026 and now requires a separate platform.

## Ad Types

- **Sponsored Products:** The most used format for book authors. Ads appear in search results and on product detail pages — including competitors' book pages. Cost-per-click, minimum $1/day budget (Amazon recommends starting at $10/day so ads run all day). Accessible directly from KDP; no separate ad account setup required.
- **Sponsored Brands:** Banner placements at the top of search results, in three creative formats — product collection (3–10 books, no custom art needed), custom image, and video. As of June 2025 Amazon opened Sponsored Brands to **single-title authors** using the custom image and video formats; only the multi-book collection format still needs three or more titles. Amazon's own author guide and KDP help page have not been updated and still state a blanket three-title requirement, so confirm eligibility in the ads console. Also CPC. If you set a lifetime budget instead of a daily one, the minimum is $100.
- **Kindle Lockscreen Ads:** Full-screen ads on locked Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, plus a banner on the Kindle home screen. **Amazon retired this as a standalone self-serve campaign type**; since April 24, 2026 the inventory is bought through Amazon DSP via self-service open auction, US only, for ebooks only. Amazon removed its dedicated Lockscreen Ads guide and no longer lists the format on its book advertising page or in KDP help.

## Eligibility

Ebooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers all qualify, including co-authored and traditionally published titles, provided they are claimed in Author Central. Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands run in twelve marketplaces: US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Australia, India, and Japan.

## Targeting Options

**Automatic targeting** lets Amazon's algorithm identify relevant keywords and competitor ASINs — useful for discovering what converts before switching to manual. **Manual keyword targeting** gives direct control over search terms and bids. **Product targeting** places ads on specific competitor book pages, genre bestseller lists, or category pages. Lockscreen inventory on DSP is audience- and interest-targeted rather than keyword-targeted.

**Budget:** Set any daily budget you choose. Sponsored Products can start at $1/day; Sponsored Brands lifetime budgets start at $100. You only pay when someone clicks. Amazon DSP's self-serve tier has no minimum spend (Amazon removed it in November 2025), but the managed-service option — display and video placements run by an Amazon account executive — requires $50,000.

## Strengths

- **Point-of-purchase reach:** No platform places ads closer to the moment a reader decides to buy.
- **KDP integration:** Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands campaigns are created directly from the KDP dashboard — no separate ad account or separate software to learn.
- **Granular ROI tracking:** ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) shows exactly which campaigns and keywords drive profitable sales. KDP authors also get attributed KENP Read and estimated Kindle Unlimited royalties in Sponsored Brands reporting, so page-read income counts toward measured return rather than disappearing from the math.
- **Free AI creative:** Amazon's built-in image generation produces custom Sponsored Brands artwork at no charge — Amazon reports book advertisers using custom images saw 48% higher mobile click-through than product-image-only ads.
- **Algorithm learns over time:** Automatic targeting improves bid efficiency as campaign data accumulates.

## Limitations

- **Steep learning curve:** Most authors lose money or break even in the first 30–60 days. Expect 60–90 days before campaigns are consistently profitable.
- **Amazon-only reach:** Ads drive traffic to Amazon product pages exclusively — no benefit for authors publishing wide or selling direct.
- **Lockscreen access got harder:** What used to be a simple $100-lifetime-budget campaign inside the ads console is now a DSP buy. There is no spend minimum, but programmatic audience buying is a materially higher skill barrier than picking genres from a dropdown.
- **Rising competition:** CPC rates in popular genres (romance, thriller) have increased over time, compressing margins.
- **Requires active management:** Passive campaigns without regular keyword review and bid adjustment rarely remain profitable.
- **Documentation lags the product:** Amazon's author guides contradict its own product announcements on Sponsored Brands eligibility, and still describe formats it has moved elsewhere. Treat the ads console, not the help pages, as the source of truth.

## Alternatives

BookBub Ads reach readers across Amazon, Apple, Kobo, and Nook simultaneously, making them better suited for wide distribution authors. Facebook Ads offer more creative control but require a separate audience-building strategy to convert at scale.
