Kirkus Indie is the self-publishing arm of Kirkus Reviews — the most recognized name in book criticism since 1933. Reviews are written by the same pool of ~200 genre-matched freelance critics who serve the Kirkus editorial program (journalists, librarians, PhDs, published writers), and a published Kirkus Indie review carries weight with librarians, booksellers, and literary agents that no other indie review service can replicate.

What You Get#

• Suppression option: Once the review is delivered, you decide whether it publishes. If you opt out, the review remains permanently private — never distributed to any magazine, feed, or licensee.
• Licensee distribution (published reviews only): 20+ content licensees including Google Books, Baker & Taylor, BN.com, and Ingram. Published reviews appear in BN.com editorial sections within ~2 weeks and reach library acquisition databases through the Baker & Taylor and Ingram feeds.
• Newsletter reach: 50,000+ subscribers (consumers and industry professionals including librarians, booksellers, and agents)
• Kirkus Stars: Editorially awarded, not purchasable. Approximately 2% of indie-reviewed books receive a Star — a significant prestige signal for authors pursuing agent queries or library placement.
• Kirkus Prize eligibility: Books earning a Kirkus Star qualify for the Kirkus Prize ($50,000 annually across Fiction, Nonfiction, and Young Readers categories).
• Kirkus Indie Awards (new for 2026): A separate competition open to any book with a published Kirkus Indie review. Entry fee is $199 per category per title across 8 categories (History & Biography, Memoir, Literary Fiction, Mysteries & Thrillers, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Romance, Picture Books, Children's Literature). Winners receive a $500 author services credit, $7,500 advertising credit, and an invitation to the Kirkus Prize ceremony. 2026 deadline: May 31; finalists July 7; winners August 27.

Who It's For#

• Library-focused authors: The Baker & Taylor and Ingram licensee feeds represent the strongest path from indie publishing into library catalog consideration
• Authors querying agents: A positive Kirkus review is a recognized signal in query letters — no other indie review service carries comparable name recognition with literary agents
• Pre-publication nonfiction authors: Library and trade credibility matters more for nonfiction; Kirkus delivers it more reliably than alternatives at this price tier

Strengths#

• Brand recognition: The Kirkus name opens doors with librarians, booksellers, and agents that self-published titles otherwise struggle to access
• Expanded Review option: ~500 words at $599/$750 provides significantly more depth than the standard tier — useful for complex nonfiction or literary fiction

Limitations#

• Community ROI: An ALLi survey of 21 authors found 16 said the review was "not worth the money" with zero reporting quantifiable sales increases. The brand opens industry doors but does not reliably drive consumer purchases.
• Kirkus Star rate is 2% for indie titles: Authors should not factor the Star into their ROI expectations — it's a bonus, not a likely outcome.
• No refunds: Once submitted, no refunds are issued regardless of review quality or the author's decision not to publish.
• No audiobooks: Audiobook submissions are not accepted. Spanish is the only non-English language supported.
• Price increase (2024): The standard tier increased from $425 to $450; expedited from $575 to $599.

Alternatives#

BlueInk Review ($445 standard) offers a similar price point with confirmed Goodreads and Amazon placement, a Booklist submission pathway to the ALA library channel, and IBPA member discounts. IndieReader ($299) costs $151 less for a comparable-length editorial review with a suppression option, though without Kirkus's library distribution reach.
