The Two Forms of WordPress#

WordPress.org (self-hosted) is free, open-source software you install on your own web server. The software costs nothing, but hosting runs $3–$10/month and a domain costs $15/year. Total realistic budget for a basic author setup: $50–$150/year. In exchange, you get complete ownership — any theme, any plugin, no platform restrictions and no vendor lock-in.

WordPress.com is a managed hosting service run by Automattic. It handles updates, security, and backups automatically. Plans range from a limited free tier (1 GB storage, .wordpress.com subdomain, ads shown on your site you cannot remove) through Personal ($4/mo annual), Premium ($8/mo annual), Business ($25/mo annual), and Commerce ($45/mo annual) for full WooCommerce functionality. April 2026 change: plugin access — previously gated behind the $25/mo Business plan — is now available on every paid tier starting at Personal ($4/mo), opening 50,000+ plugins (including WooCommerce, Yoast SEO, MailPoet) to entry-level subscribers.

Personal ($4/mo annual) is the realistic entry point for a professional author site — and as of April 2026, it now includes the full plugin directory and WooCommerce, which previously required Business ($25/mo).

Strengths#

• Maximum flexibility and ownership: No platform lock-in, no vendor risk, complete data ownership on self-hosted installs. Theme switching is free and non-destructive (unlike Squarespace or Wix where switching means rebuilding).

Limitations#

• Maintenance overhead (self-hosted): You are responsible for updating WordPress core, all themes, and all plugins. Over 7,900 vulnerabilities were disclosed across the WordPress ecosystem in 2024. Plugin conflicts and security patching are ongoing realities.
• Real cost is obscured: WordPress.org is often described as "free," but a functional author site requires paid hosting and a domain. Budget $50–$150/year minimum for self-hosted.
• Learning curve: Significantly higher barrier to entry than Squarespace, Wix, or Ghost. Setting up a polished author site with WooCommerce takes hours to days, not minutes.
• Governance uncertainty: A legal dispute between Automattic (WordPress.com's parent company) and WP Engine began in September 2024 and is ongoing as of early 2026. Automattic reduced core WordPress development contributions in January 2025. Day-to-day use on WordPress.com is unaffected, but the controversy has shaken ecosystem trust.

Alternatives#

Squarespace ($16–$99/mo) and Wix (free–$159/mo) are significantly easier to set up and maintain, with no server management. Ghost ($15–$199/mo) is purpose-built for author blogs, memberships, and newsletters with a lower maintenance burden than self-hosted WordPress.
